I must say I was worried that I had picked a loser to read. A new reader of Margaret Mallory, I had no history to rely on. I read all the book reviews and excerpts I could get my hands on. I felt fairly certain I was making a wise choice with this new writer. Wrong ! What a disappointment when each page I turned got heavier and heavier. The Hero was a loser ! First, he ran away from a forced marriage to his childhood friend ( a gawky, clumsy, 13 year old with big teeth but an adoring pest ). He should have been able to convince his father of their innocence. Plus, he insulted the poor child by asking his father, " Have you looked at her, Da ?", where she could hear. So rather than defend her and himself, he grabbed his three "besties" and ran to war in France! He also failed to consummate the marriage. Five years pass. Sileas ( heroine ) is still awaiting his return because she still loves Ian. She has turned into a beautiful, soft-spoken, graceful woman. Her good friend and neighbor, loves her and has almost convinced her to annul the marriage. The four Scots receive word of the beating the Scots took at Flodden and return home. When he sees Sileas, he doesn't recognize her! The Rastard ! Then he just wants her body ! It's still so boring that I am tempted to finally give it up and close the cover for good but I hate to quit sooooooooo......a few more chapters. We are now mid book and FINALLY, the story starts moving ! Sileas and Ian's younger brother are off to the Queen to obtain an annulment and we have ACTION! We now discover how much,Ian,loves Sileas and his loyalty to clan and friends. The action picks up as he uses his massive brawn and brain to straighten everything out. I now like the H/h and can identify with them.Do I recommend this book? Yes, but be prepared, in case you do get bored, it does get better with a HEA!

Ian had been Sileas's protector since they were babes and she had followed him and his friends (Connor, Duncan and Alex) everywhere, but when circumstances forced them to wed at a young age, Ian rebelled and turned his back on her when she needed him the most, he and his friends leaving to fight in France, only to return five years later when word reached them that their clan was in turmoil after the Chieftain's death. Though I sometimes find a main character annoying or frustrating, it isn't often that I actually hate a hero/heroine, but I hated Ian for over half of this book. He seemed a nice boy and I could understand why Sileas loved the boy he was, but becoming a man seemed to suck many of his good qualities right out of him, and he was forever being cold, unfeeling and selfish. He had a far way to go to crawl out from that lowly place, but he did in the end, though not without pain and suffering (his own, as well as others). Sileas, I loved from the beginning and truly sympathized with her, admiring her strength. It was truly great to see Ian's slow evolution into a hero and look forward to reading the stories of his three friends, all of whom were intriguing. The next book in this series is The Sinner, about Ian's cousin, Alex.
I am a Highlander story junkie, and so I peruse 's books from time to time for new Highlander stories to read...and I stumbled upon Ms. Mallory's Return of the Highlanders series. I was so excited after I read the reviews...I immediately purchased this book, The Guardian, the first in the series. I just finished this story and I can tell you...I was delighted! I am also glad that there are several more books in this same series, so I purchased the second, the third and the fourth books so I can continue the stories uninterrupted. The research on Highland life that Ms. Mallory has done is obvious from the start the weapons, the apparel, the food, the language, and the land seem so real from her descriptions that you feel like you are right there in the story alongside the characters. The wooing of the heroine by Ian and his clan's struggles really got my blood going in this story! I highly recommend this series to any reader.
This is the first in Mallory's latest series, the Return of the Highlanders, and it's a well written, worthy tale. It sets the stage for the stories of four Highland warriors whose lives to this point have been fighting and war, but after learning of the Scots' disastrous loss to Henry VIII, they return to the Isle of Skye to find their chieftain and king dead, and their clan in peril.
The four MacDonald men must take wives to serve the clan's interests. First up is Ian MacDonald who 5 years earlier was forced to wed the 13-year-old Sileas ("Shee-las") who, as a child, followed him around like a devoted puppy. He hasn't seen her since, nor has he thought about the wife he never claimed. She has changed. Now a beauty, she is tired of being ignored and decides to seek an annulment from the queen, just when Ian has decided he will keep her after all.
Ian comes across as a self-absorbed male for the first part of the book, which I suppose, he is. Then he discovers he married a woman who is actually desirable and admirable and might as well keep her. Sileas has never stopped loving Ian so she puts up with a lot, including the knowledge he has not been faithful to her, which he excuses as a time when he didn't consider he was really married. I have to say the one icky part was the fact the woman Sileas had seen him have sex with was in the story the whole time.
I liked that Mallory wove in real historical facts. The characters are well drawn and the villains sufficiently evil to be believable. There is the clan rivalry and intrigue one would expect, too. She also has a nice blend of modern language and sufficient Scots for us to know we are reading a Scottish tale. We get to see Stirling castle and meet some real historic figures like Archibald Douglas, the Earl of Angus, who figured so prominently in Scotland's history.
It's a solid first story and will draw you into early 16th century Scotland and the Highlands. I recommend it.
