No blurb this time 'round. This Demonica spinoff and the Demonica books themselves have always had some darkness to them but this first part of book was filled with torture of the hero, violation of a continuing character, and more of Pestilence's depravity just tossed off in the background. I started Immortal Rider the day it came out and read the first hundred pages and then I just got tired of being bludgeoned with how evil the bad guys were and set the book aside.

I did end up picking this back up, but I struggled through to the 2/3rds mark where the action finally kicked in. I think that the reason that this was such a difficult read for me is that I just never got to the point where I clicked with Limos, actually I didn't much like her and never came to care about her redemption. Normally, a great hero can offset a less than stellar heroine but Arik, despite his interesting history and secret powers, was pretty generic for a leading man. It didn't help that the romance between them didn't work for me either, how does one get past all the deception and torture - not as easy breezy as it is done here for sure.

One of the things that kept me reading to the bitter end was that I really liked Thanatos and his thread had a better build up than Limos/Arik's right up to the 'completion' of Regan's mission which was shockingly terrible. In fact all of the 'deflowerings' in Immortal Rider were squicky. So the lack of the normally uber steamy build up to a satisfying consummation - times two - dropped the book from okay to not.

So bottom line, I am not exactly sure what to say. I guess that Immortal Rider felt more UF-y and less romance-y to me (or perhaps horror/romance-y), the focus is not as much on the relationship as the events, and putting the elements of the Apocalypse in play. And as to future books - I am still sort of interested in Thanatos' book but I absolutely agree with who ever said way back when that they didn't want to see a story for a redeemed Harvester with a salvaged Reseph as a book four.

So, Arik kisses Limos, one of the four Apocalyptic Horsemen (except Limos is a girl) and all hell breaks loose. Arik is immediately thrust into Hell and tortured because Limos is engaged to Satan, and of course, Satan is one jealous SOB. But Satan cannot marry Limos until he can get her into hell, and he cannot get her into hell until Arik speaks her name under extreme misery/torture, which he never does. (confused yet?) He refuses to speak her name since this is basically, WHY he's being tortured and what his torturers are wanting. (I love Arik...he and the fourth Horseman, Thanatos, made this entire story worth the read).

But eventually Arik escapes with the help of "Pestilence" formerly known as Reseph...one of the four horsemen. Pestilence helps Arik only to take his soul. Pestilence owns Arik's soul. Needless to say, Pestilence has turned pure evil and is killing humans with many forms of disease and pestilence.

This story is about the end of days...Armageddon, and the Apocalypse. It's about Angels and Fallen Angels and Demons...Vampires, Werewolves and Shape Shifters. It's all about eons of planning to make the Apocalypse occur.
Well, it took me long enough to start this series, but now that I've started there's no turning back. The Lords of Deliverance have got me hooked. *sigh* I bet no one saw that one coming.

I loved the story between Cara and Ares in Eternal Rider and I wondered how I was going to relate to Limos and Arik. They were introduced in the first book, but I didn't feel a connection to either one of them. Larissa Ione took care of any doubt I had by the time I was finished with the second chapter. From that point on the action didn't stop and neither did the forbidden heat between Arik and Limos.

Once again, the main characters were in an impossible situation. As much as I wanted them to find their HEA, how could it possibly happen given the fact that Limos was promised to satan himself. And then there was Pestilence being his charming self. There was just no possible way that this could work out. All I'm going to say is that it's a good thing that this story was driven by the imagination of Larissa Ione. There was plenty of action, drama, smexiness (and not only between Arik and Limos - just wait!) Not to mention the lies and secrets that surrounded just about everyone involved. Immortal Rider was definitely a page turner!

As I read this one I realized that I needed to go back and read Larissa Ione's Demonica Series. A lot of the supporting characters and the new Aegis allies to the Horsemen were first introduced there and although I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not reading it first, I still want to get to know all those characters better. I'm thinking about picking it up before I continue with the Lords of Deliverance. However, Thanatos book is next and I'm not sure I can break away from the Horsemen just yet. Lethal Rider is sure to be another wild ride with the infamous Horsemen.
