I was reading "The Worst Journey in the World," by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, a complete account of Scott's expedition to the Antarctic in 1910-1913, and it constantly references the drawings and paintings being made by Edward Wilson. I wanted to have the full experience, so I bought this book. It contains high quality reproductions of so many of Wilson's works, along with brief explanations of chronology and context, and lots of good info about Wilson himself, who was Scott's right-hand man. The book is absolutely gorgeous. Very happy to have it.

I found it impossible to read of the Terra Nova Expedition without having my curiosity aroused about the work that Wilson died producing. Obviously the compliments paid to him by his contemporaries were well deserved. Recommended to anyone with an interest in Antarctic exploration.
With a few essential pages describing history from the life of Edward Wilson, two of his nephews have collected a representative sample of sketches, drawings and watercolors and reproduced them for posterity. Wilson made journeys to Antarctica in the early 1900's to view and record nature and wildlife during a time when photography was just coming into use. He remains, then, perhaps one of the last true artists to have recorded the south pole nature in detail. Wilson died during a return from the south pole with the ill-fated Scott Expedition.

The book is a coffee-table sized volume, with very heavy paper and excellent reproductions of exquisite watercolor paintings and drawings. Essentially a book of art, it seeks to keep alive the legacy of Edward Wilson and preserve the delicate and fragile watercolors that show the subtle colors and shading of light in a land of the midnight sun. While this is a niche genre, it is a must for anyone who is a student of the polar regions and the age of exploration at the turn of the century.

The more I read about the South Pole attempts made by Scott the more I came to admire Edward Wilson for his steady outlook and dedication to others' needs, and, his amazing attention to the scientific work on both expeditions. My admiration grew more with Apsley Cherry Garrard's book, in which he quotes extensively from Scott's and Wilson's dairies, plus he presents a more thorough and balanced analysis of what went wrong on Scott's ill-fated journey, which contrasted nicely with Roland Huntford's book The Last Place on Earth, my first read on this subject of the South Pole journey. Apsley's The Worst Journey in the World, and, Captain Scott by Ranulph Fiennes both relieve some of the angst raised by Huntford, and, both books bring out the essence of E.A. Wilson, a very likeable character. As another reviewer wrote, Cherry-Garrard's writings stated that the men on the journey were impressed by how accurate Wilson's sketches and especially watercolors of the landscape were. The explorers stated again and again in their diaries how unusual the lighting and coloration can be in the Antarctic, and tis book really does justice to those descriptions, and it does justice to the man whom we now know better through his art.
The artworks are so detailed and exact. The history of the exposition that he was on when he drew these is fascinating and makes his work that much more exciting
