Torn Lace Curtain Frank Saunders James Southwood 9780523421216 Books Reviews
One-time bookie Frank Saunders' colorful account of his years working for "The Chief -- old Joe Kennedy -- as chauffeur for the semi-senile, batty Rose Kennedy rings true with myriad anecdotes and insider perspective on how things got run and done at the so-called Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport and at the winter home in Palm Beach.
Kennedy cousin Ann Gargan comes off almost as dopey as her Aunt Rose, and the animosity over who was in charge of old Joe's care between her and nurse Rita Dallas is evident. Rose, ever the narcissistic bible-thumping moron, remains the star here, and it becomes clear why nobody in the family save for the youngest of grandkids ever took her seriously.
Saunders appears quite fond of Jacqueline and Joan and he even tosses Ethel a few bones of praise. Frank also was a big fan of Peter Lawford, an occasional drinking buddy, all the while remaining quite candid about Joe and Rose's daughter Pat Lawford's drinking -- as in a bottle of white wine most mornings for breakfast. Here you'll also get a glimpse of Ted's pre-Chappaquiddick drunk driving scrapes.
Unlike so many of the Kennedy family scorchers written by former secretaries, nurses and such, these chapters of juicy recollections are from a male's perspective. And the man never failed to know his place as the chauffeur, compared to secretary/bookkeeper Mary Gallagher's bitchy account where she ended up likening herself and Jackie as sisters.
Definitely, Torn Lace Curtain should be added to any collection of Kennedy family presidential era accounts .I'm surprised it bombed as it seemingly did upon publication.
I loved this book. Very easy read. I think I finished it in three days. I've been reading Kennedy related books for 40 years so I'm always looking for ones I haven't read. This was a good find!
Thanks!!!
This is one of the funniest non-fiction books I've ever read.
Weatherworn; lovely story a bit in your face in some sections with the class distinctions.
Had to buy my own copy - like this book!
An EXCELLENT book for Kennedy buffs. Behind-the-scenes peek with the Kennedy family's chauffeur.
